Band Parents' Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be extra rehearsals?

ANSWER: Most events are planned well in advance and students are informed and updated constantly. There are times, however, when we must hold an extra rehearsal. Keep in mind our schedule is dependent upon students coming to rehearsal prepared and ready to perform their part. It is preferred that we never have to have an extra rehearsal outside those scheduled. Like dominoes, a band is dependent on each member to stand up and carry their weight. When some don't, it affects the entire band performance and costs everyone more time, and often that leads to frustration and stress. The key is that the student be prepared on the class work (music) being covered. Also, everyone should make an effort to stay in good physical shape. Good health cannot be underestimated in its effect on your performance in class or public events. Most extra rehearsals can be avoided if students come to scheduled practices prepared and in good health. Time and health are precious to us all.

Will my student know the schedule?

ANSWER: We work hard to keep everyone informed.

  • Deadlines will be adhered to. Students are reminded almost daily about upcoming deadlines.
  • Being late can result in dropped grade, late fees, etc.
  • We have a student calendar for the current month posted in the classroom.
  • We have an Upcoming Events Board with the week's activities posted in the classroom.
  • Reminders are written on the chalkboard.
  • Students receive daily verbal reminders repeatedly, never just once!
  • Flyers are sometimes sent home. Calls are made.
  • There is absolutely no reason to say "I didn't know" or "You never told me."
  • Be responsible—pay attention, take notes when necessary, listen in class.
  • Planners are used in class to post the band schedule of rehearsals and events.
  • Ask the Band Director or Assistant Band Director when in doubt.
  • Booster meetings help parents stay informed of calendar changes and additions.
  • Parents: regularly ask for schedule updates from your child.

What if I can't afford the band fees?

ANSWER: Money should not be a barrier to participation in this organization. We are proud to offer many ways to help you pay your student's band fees. Selling See's Candy, volunteering to help with the auction, selling ads to the Band Review program are just a few. If those earnings are not enough, the Band Boosters offer scholarships. Fill in a scholarship form and put it in the locked Boosters box in the band room. Don't worry, the Boosters don't contact your bank or look for credit references.

Does my student have to own an instrument?

ANSWER: Through the school and grant money, the school has some instruments/equipment which may be used by the students and issued by the Band Director. Each student using school owned equipment must fill out and return a checkout form with a parent signature prior to receiving the instrument/equipment. Preference is given to seniority and the good of the band. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain and cover any repair costs during the school year. Students and parents will be held responsible for damage not caused by normal wear and tear.
